No se trata de un western del Oeste sino de una película sobre su querida Irlanda, tan habitual en su cinematografía. El hombre tranquilo (The quiet man) es una película deliciosa, con una caracterización de personajes excelente y que narra una historia sencilla y por qué no, romántica. El reparto —puramente fordiano— es deslumbrante: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Víctor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond..
Casi en su totalidad fue rodada en Irlanda, hogar de Maureen O'Hara y Barry Fitzgerald. El guión es una adaptación de Frank Nugent de una historia de Maurice Walsh titulada Green Rushes, y mereció la nominación al Oscar
Sean Thornton es un famoso boxeador que vuelve a Innisfree, a su casa de Irlanda que le vió nacer. Allí conoce a Mary Kate Danaher una joven pelirroja, intrigante y de gran carácter de la que se enamora. Sin embargo, el hermano de Mary Kate, un grandullón de gran peso en el pueblo, no ve con buenos ojos la relación y tardará en dar su aprobación. La historia es narrada por el padre Lonergan, el párroco del pueblo.
La riqueza visual de los verdes prados irlandeses, las cómicas charlas y canciones en la taberna, junto con el romanticismo de la historia la convierten en una obra maestra. No se trata de hazañas de caballería, ni de la valentía de un gran pistolero, sino de una sencilla historia acaecida en un pueblo perdido irlandés. También cabe destacar que gran parte del éxito recae en el tono bromista y de comedia y en los tintes nostálgicos del film. Resultó ser un proyecto difícil de financiar. Los grandes estudios lo rehuyeron al no tratarse del tipo de película-western de Ford, y éste tuvo que acudir a uno pequeño, la Republic Pictures.
Resulta sorprendente descubrir que John Ford —el maestro del western— ganara todos sus Oscars en películas que nada tienen que ver con los indios y vaqueros: El delator (The informer, 1935), Qué verde era mi valle (How green was my valley, 1940), Las uvas de la ira (The grapes of wrath, 1940) y El hombre tranquilo (1952). John Wayne firma uno de los mejores papeles de su carrera. Incomprensiblemente ni siquiera fue merecedor de una nominación; el Oscar se le resistiría aún muchos años más.
El realismo del rodaje en ocasiones superó la ficción. La pareja Wayne-O'Hara funcionó a la perfección. Fue su segunda película juntos, después de Río Grande (1950), y no sería la última pues rodarían juntos 4 más. Un dato curioso es el de que Maureen O'Hara se llamara "Mary Kate", los nombres que su padre le quiso poner al nacer... Desde luego debió ser una película especial para ella.
Además del Oscar de Ford, la película recibió 3 nominaciones de la Academia: mejor película, mejor actor de reparto (Víctor McLaglen), y mejor guión (Frank Nugent)

SINOPSIS: Sean Thorton, un boxeador norteamericano, regresa a su Irlanda

El mundo del cine ha recreado multitud de pueblos encantadores con sus
personajes, sus costumbres y sus vidas... pero ninguno como Innisfree.
La historia de un ex-boxeador irlandés (inmenso John Wayne) que vuelve
de América a su pueblo natal y se enamora de la hermana de su mayor
enemigo es una comedia en estado de gracia que transpira el mejor
talento de John Ford en cada plano. A pesar de su aparente sencillez,
llevó años financiarla, y tras su estreno se convirtió en un clásico
inmediato (además de funcionar muy bien en taquilla en USA). Un film de
